Responsibilities

• As a Senior Backend Engineer on the EV Platform team you will be working on the data infrastructure that powers Mapbox's global EV charging station coverage. This includes the ingestion pipeline that processes data from a global network of charge point operators and data aggregators, the quality systems that keep that data accurate, and the APIs that serve it to customers and internal teams. • Projects you might take part in: • Expanding global EV charging coverage by integrating with new charge point operators across new regions • Building systems that reconcile and unify charging station data across multiple providers into a single authoritative dataset • Building and scaling the data ingestion pipeline for higher reliability and throughput • Designing data validation and quality systems to ensure accuracy of charging station attributes and live availability • Developing internal tooling and dashboards to monitor data health and surface corrections • Supporting downstream Mapbox teams consuming EV charging data in their products • Design and implement scalable data pipelines and backend services, following best practices for deployment, resilience, and observability • Run and design experiments to evaluate the quality, accuracy, and coverage of EV charging data • Participate in end-to-end feature implementation within the larger Mapbox ecosystem; review code and design documents, shepherd feature releases, and participate in an on-call rotation • Work with product owners, partner teams, and management to drive future data platform direction • What We Believe are Important Traits for This Role • Strong proficiency in Rust (3+ years) for production backend services. • Experience building highly available backend services and data pipelines in container-based environments on AWS, including Docker, ECS, Fargate, or Kubernetes, with hands-on experience in service monitoring, incident triage, and continuous product improvement. Familiarity with Argo and Datadog is a plus. • Knowledge of data engineering concepts, including pipeline design, data quality validation, and large-scale data processing. • Knowledge of distributed systems (fault-tolerance, consistency, service discovery). System architecture experience and understanding of architectural concepts. Ability to improve services based on data analysis and performance profiling. • Being an excellent team player with the ability to work within a collaborative environment. • Enthusiasm for learning and knowledge sharing, supported by strong communication skills in English. • Passion about programming and a strong focus on quality. Implementation of automated tests. • As AI becomes embedded in modern engineering workflows, we value engineers who can thoughtfully integrate AI into design, development, and decision-making. Our interview process will include discussion of how you use AI in your engineering workflow. • What We Value • What We Value • In addition to our core values, which are not unique to this position and are necessary for Mapbox leaders: • We value high-performing creative individuals who dig into problems and opportunities. • We believe in individuals being their whole selves at work. We commit to this through supportive health care, parental leave, flexibility for the things that come up in life, and innovating on how we think about supporting our people. • We emphasize an environment of teaching and learning to equip employees with the tools needed to be successful in their function and the company. • We strongly believe in the value of growing a diverse team and encourage people of all backgrounds, genders, ethnicities, abilities, and sexual orientations to apply. • By applying for this position, you acknowledge that you have received the Mapbox Non-US Privacy Notice for applicants, which is linked here.  Completing this application requires you to provide personal data, such as your name and contact information, which is mandatory for Mapbox to process your application. • We are committed to a fair and equitable hiring process. We do not discriminate against any protected class.
