Wikimedia Foundation - Italian Translator / Linguist (Contract)
Requirements
• Fluency in English • Fluency in the language you will be translating into • Experience communicating within the Wikimedia movement • And it would be even better if you: • Have experience with Translate extension in use on Meta-Wiki and other multilingual wikis • Have experience with WordPress or other content management systems • The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. • The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.
Responsibilities
• Respond to requests for translation assistance (Translation, Translation Review, or Proofreading) on an ad-hoc basis and submit completed work and/or tasks by mutually agreed upon deadlines. We will request your personal feedback on our messages (discussing cultural and idiomatic nuances). • Translation [Primary Task] - The Linguist will be the go-to translator for all online fundraising content in Italian, including but not limited to: email and banner fundraising appeals, payment forms, donor support pages, etc. • Revise reviewer edits - A Localization best practice is that all content that is translated must undergo an additional translation review by someone different than the original translator (i.e. by a language service agency or native speaking colleague in the Wikimedia movement). This QA ensures quality and catches any potential spelling, grammar, punctuation, or translation errors. The linguist will thus need to revise the suggested edits made by the reviewer, and decide whether to accept/incorporate them, or whether to reject them. • Final - Proofreading of content after it has been coded, before going live
