Requirements

• We care more about depth and taste than years on a resume, but successful candidates typically have 7+ years of frontend or design engineering experience, including time spent operating at a senior IC level on a high-bar team. • You have unmistakable craft. Your work is polished, considered, and consistent. You can point to surfaces you've shipped and explain the small decisions that made them feel right. • You're a systems thinker. You've substantially shaped or maintained a design system at scale, not just consumed one. You think hard about component API design, token architecture, accessibility primitives, and how a system holds up under pressure across many teams and applications. • You obsess over performance. You think about Core Web Vitals, bundle size, render cost, and perceived performance the way other engineers think about correctness. • You influence without authority. You can sit in a room with a PM, engineers, and co-founders and move the conversation forward. You write clearly. You disagree well. You make the trade-offs visible. • You raise the bar. You've mentored other engineers and designers, set patterns others adopted, and made teammates better through your reviews and your work. • You go deep. You read the spec. You build the prototype. You actually understand the thing instead of approximating it. • You thrive in ambiguity. Mission-critical work in defense isn't always tidy. Priorities shift. You stay calm, ship, and adjust. • You make the team better. On a team of two, every hire shapes how we work. You bring your own strengths but check your ego at the door. You give honest feedback, take it just as well, and treat your teammates' wins as your own. The work we ship is a reflection of how we work together. • Experience with React, Next.js, and TypeScript. • Expertise with Tailwind CSS and deep understanding of modern CSS (container queries, cascade layers, OKLCH, view transitions, etc.). • Strong grasp of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2) and performance metrics (Core Web Vitals, Lighthouse). • Excellent communication skills. You can explain a technical decision, a design rationale, or a trade-off in writing in a way that lands with the audience. • Demonstrated experience designing and building design systems/component libraries used by other engineering teams. • Fluency in Figma — including variables, modes, auto layout, and component architecture that mirrors code. • Proficiency with motion and interaction design, including modern animation libraries. • Comfort designing data-dense interfaces — tables, charts, dashboards, real-time displays. • Familiar with monorepos, CI/CD, and GitHub Actions. • Prior experience shaping and maintaining a shared design system. • Geospatial / mapping experience (Mapbox, MapLibre, deck.gl http://deck.gl, Cesium). • Experience shipping in a regulated or secure environment (defense, finance, healthcare).

Responsibilities

• Design and implement complex, data-rich product surfaces on Horizon, our maritime acoustic data platform, from first sketch to production. • Help evolve our design system/component library. Uphold the standards for accessibility, type safety, performance, and API design that the rest of the org builds on. • Pair tightly with Product, full-stack engineers, other design engineers, and stakeholders — translating ambiguous mission requirements into concrete UI directions and trade-offs. • Set the craft bar through review and mentorship. Run pull request reviews and design audits that level up the people around you. • Champion performance, accessibility (WCAG 2.2 AA), and maintainability as first-class concerns, not afterthoughts. • Help shape how Design Engineering scales at Spear AI.
