kit - Head of Legal
Requirements
• Deep expertise in data, compliance, and product—this is where you'll spend most of your time. • Strong ability to navigate U.S. and European data privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), including familiarity with data controller vs. processor distinctions and how they shape vendor and product decisions. • Ability to translate privacy and compliance requirements into scalable playbooks, templates, intake processes, and self-service guidance • Experience supporting customer security questionnaires and partnering effectively with security, sales, product, and engineering teams • Familiarity with SOC 2 Type II and the legal, privacy, and customer requirements associated with it, even if you haven't directly owned a certification process • Understanding of intellectual property law, especially related to brand, content, and software • Understanding of commercial contracts—you'll become the go-to person for these at Kit. • Clear communicator and trusted advisor—able to simplify complexity and help others make informed decisions • Experience as in-house counsel at a tech company or serving a tech portfolio at a top-tier firm that's well-known for their work with startups (e.g., Fenwick & West, Cooley) • J.D. from an accredited law school in the United States • Active member in good standing of a State Bar Association • Strategic thinker who sees legal as a lever, not a blocker • Deeply curious and business-oriented—you start by understanding the goals, then explore the smartest paths to get there. • Collaborative partner who can navigate conflict productively • Deep belief that creator success is our success—you consider both Kit and our customers in every recommendation • A "how might we" problem-solver who finds creative, business-aligned paths through legal challenges • WHAT WON'T SET YOU UP FOR SUCCESS • Needing a team of in-house peers or co-counsel to pressure-test every decision—you'll be our sole in-house legal expert, with outside counsel available as needed • A strongly risk-averse or "no-before-yes" mindset—we need you to help us move, not just stop us from tripping • Thinking in a legal vacuum—if you're not factoring in our goals, numbers, or creators, your advice won't land • Struggling with speed or ownership—if you prefer long timelines or wait to be told what to do, this won't be the right environment. We move quickly and expect people to take initiative, spot problems, and drive solutions. • WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

• First year: Help Kit operate at a higher level of legal maturity across privacy, compliance, product counsel, commercial contracts, and security support. Establish durable systems that allow teams to answer common questions independently while escalating higher-risk matters appropriately. Help us treat privacy, data, and compliance as strategic enablers—not just boxes to check—and significantly reduce our reliance on outside counsel for work we can handle effectively in-house. • WHAT WILL S.E.T. YOU UP FOR SUCCESS
