Requirements

Strong written and verbal communication, with a bias to written communication to support async processes in a fully remote and distributed team.
2+ years of engineering management experience or equivalent (you can demonstrate skill at key aspects of building and improving an engineering team, and supporting and developing people's careers).
Ability to debug project execution to identify issues and changes to one or more of people, process, and project scope.
Strong product sensibilities - you can critically navigate product proposal docs and Figma designs and translate them to engineering requirements that span the Metabase product stack, and identify and mitigate risks to building them.
Strong technical background in one of: Clojure or Frontend (React + Typescript) ecosystems.

Highly technical - can fluently read code, tech design docs, can engage in technical discussions that make the technical artifacts better, can provide constructive technical feedback, and is very close to the implementation details
Use their technical understanding to make decisions regarding project execution and delivery.
Problem decomposition to reduce risk, increase surface area for feedback and to be able to continuously adjust plans taking reality into account.
Ability to coach and grow engineers, especially in a low structure environment without formal titles and well-defined career ladders.

Responsibilities

Lead and manage the engineering team to ensure high performance and productivity in delivering quality software products within deadlines.
Collaborate with other teams such as Product Management, Design, Quality Assurance, etc., to align on project goals and timelines while ensuring technical feasibility of requirements.
Provide guidance and mentorship for individual team members' professional growth by identifying opportunities for skill development and career advancement within the organization or industry at large.
Establish clear expectations regarding code quality, testing standards, documentation practices, etc., to maintain a high standard across all projects while ensuring consistency in technical approaches among different teams working on similar products/services.
Monitor progress against project milestones and deliverables regularly through status meetings with team members or direct reports; provide feedback when necessary based upon performance evaluations conducted periodically throughout the year (e.g., quarterly).
Participate actively in strategic planning sessions held by senior management to discuss upcoming initiatives/projects that may impact engineering operations directly, including resource allocation decisions related thereto as well as potential risks associated with those plans; communicate any concerns promptly so appropriate mitigation measures can be taken before they become critical issues affecting overall business objectives negatively.
Represent the Engineering Manager role at all levels of organizational communication channels (e.g., internal emails, meetings) when necessary to provide updates on team progress/challenges faced by members working remotely; facilitate effective collaboration among different teams across various locations worldwide via video conferencing tools like Zoom or Skype whenever possible while ensuring confidentiality of sensitive information shared during such interactions.
Oversee the hiring process for new engineers joining your team(s), including reviewing applications, conducting interviews/screenings with candidates selected based on qualifications and experience relevant to specific roles being filled; provide feedback after each interview round regarding how well applicants met expectations set forth during initial discussions about their desired career path within the organization.
Participate in regular performance evaluations conducted by senior management for individual team members, providing constructive criticism when necessary while recognizing achievements appropriately through formal acknowledgments such as awards/certificates given annually at company events like "Engineer of the Year."
Maintain open lines of communication with other department heads (e.g., Product Management) regarding changes in project requirements or scope that may impact engineering operations directly; collaborate closely with them throughout implementation phases to ensure seamless integration between different aspects being worked upon simultaneously across various teams working remotely worldwide via video conferencing tools like Zoom/Skype whenever possible while ensuring confidentiality of sensitive information shared during such interactions.
