Requirements
• Strong people leadership — the top priority for this role • Hands-on enough to review code, prototype, and contribute directly when it helps the team • Comfort operating in ambiguity, with adaptability and a growth mindset • Proven experience building and scaling teams, ideally growing a group from a handful of engineers into a larger org • Experience managing engineers; including senior and staff engineers; hiring, and performance management • Hands-on experience with usage-based billing, payments, or other revenue-critical systems, including third-party platforms like Orb, Metronome, or Stripe • Ability to partner closely with Finance, Product, and Customer Experience without needing to fill those functions yourself • Strong business instincts, with the ability to connect engineering investment to billing accuracy, revenue, and customer trust • Background from either a startup or a larger company is fine. What matters is experience and ability to operate in a fast-paced environment • Experience leading a billing platform migration or a pricing model change. • Familiarity with financial reconciliation and reporting processes. • Background in distributed systems or event-driven architectures. • Experience building for developer platforms, cloud infrastructure, or DevTools. • If this role excites you but you don’t meet every single requirement, we’d still love to hear from you—your unique experience might be just what we need.
Responsibilities
• Lead and grow the Billing engineering team, which owns how Render turns platform usage into accurate charges: usage capture, data pipelines, third-party billing platforms (Orb, Metronome, Stripe, or similar), and invoicing • Own the roadmap for Render’s billing systems, from usage metering through invoicing, reconciliation, and financial reporting • Drive billing correctness and reliability: build the monitoring, reconciliation, and testing that catch errors before customers do • Partner with Finance, Product, and Customer Experience to align the roadmap with pricing, reporting, and customer needs • Hire and develop engineers to support planned team growth, while keeping the team’s focus clear as billing scope expands • Make key architectural decisions, balancing long-term billing platform investment against near-term pricing launches and fixes • Build a strong performance management and career development practice for a team that includes senior ICs
