EnergyHub - Staff Software Engineer, Data and Partner Platform
Requirements
• Engineering craft • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated staff-level responsibilities or equivalent scope • Proven full-stack engineering background with experience scaling distributed systems and designing solidly-architected microservices • Strong proficiency with gRPC/protobuf, RESTful APIs, and contract driven development across multi-repository service meshes. • Clear understanding of the distinction between OLAP and OLTP relational databases, with hands-on experience planning and implementing high-performance data processes using both. • Demonstrated experience integrating complex partner and third party APIs as well as building and maintaining file-driven data pipelines. • Engineering instincts • Relentless drive for quality and performance, with strong testing discipline spanning unit, integration, TDD, and end to end approaches. • Proactive approach to observability. You ensure the right context surfaces in exceptions and logs to enable rapid and accurate troubleshooting. • Strong data-integrity instincts and incident-response composure, with the ability to lead high-severity, multi-system investigations from first alert to final root cause. • Experience in support-adjacent roles including on-call rotations, triage, or customer facing resolution that has provided you empathy for how systems fail and how users get stuck. • Thoughtful, judicious use of AI/LLM tooling to improve efficiency without over-reliance. • Communication and presence • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. You have a talent for producing clear, concise design documents, data model references, and runbooks that become team-standard reference material. • Ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy while providing technical vision and guiding the team toward scalable, well-considered solutions. • Collaborative, warm, and generous with colleagues, with a genuine investment in helping others succeed. • Prior experience in the energy industry, including familiarity with utility programs, demand response, DER management, or wholesale energy markets. • Experience working in regulated industries with compliance and data privacy requirements. • Background in building internal developer tooling, platform capabilities, or shared infrastructure that improves team-wide productivity. • Familiarity with data quality monitoring and observability tooling. • Technologies we use • We embrace modern technology and are excited to grow our stack collaboratively. For this role, we're looking for strong familiarity with the majority of these technologies and solid expertise in several: • AWS, S3, SNS/SQS, RabbitMQ • Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran, Postgres, and MongoDB • gRPC/protobuf, React, TypeScript, Java, Spring Boot, Python • DataDog, Metaplane • Airflow, Docker, Robot Framework • Please note that sponsorship of new applicants for employment authorization, or any other immigration-related support, is not available for this position at this time. • Work with the latest technologies: You'll gain exposure to a broad spectrum of IoT, SaaS and machine learning obstacles, including distributed fault-tolerance, device control optimization, and process modeling to support scalable interaction with disparate downstream APIs. • Work with the latest technologies: • Be part of something important: Help create the future of how energy is produced and consumed. Make a positive impact on our climate. • Be part of something important: • EnergyHub empowers utilities and their customers to create a clean, distributed energy future. We help consumers turn their smart thermostats, EVs, batteries, and other products into virtual power plants that keep the grid stable and enable higher penetration of solar and wind power. • To learn more, visit energyhub.com.
Responsibilities
• Technical leadership and vision • Champion long-term excellence by envisioning ideal approaches to complex processes and translating the vision into well-scoped, measurable initiatives that can be prioritized alongside business goals. • Coordinate across engineering teams to align on technical direction, standards, and best practices. • Develop deep domain expertise in utility programs, demand responses, DER lifecycles, wholesale energy markets, and the regulatory realities that shape them, so every technical decision is grounded in how the energy industry actually operates. • Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to strike the right balance between business-driven and team-driven priorities, maximizing both velocity and reliability. • Build the absolutely coolest stuff of your career and give yourself something to be deeply proud of. • Systems design and data engineering • Architect and implement scalable systems for ingesting, processing, observing, and maintaining billions of data points, with performance, accuracy, security, and compliance considered across the full lifecycle. • Lead schema design and data flow architecture through a collaborative and inclusive process. • Design and build integrations with partner and third party APIs, including OEMs, utility, and data partners, as well as file-driven pipelines (CSV/SFTP/Airflow) that support them. • Build and maintain microservices and APIs that other teams confidently depend on, using contract-driven development practices. • Operational excellence and incident response • Drive investigations end to end, from initial alert through root cause analysis to resolution, with the composure to lead under pressure and the rigor to prevent recurrence. • Build operational scripts, runbooks, and detection tooling that transform one-time triage into repeatable capability for the team. • Pursue root causes beyond their symptoms, never accepting "it's working now” without a clear understanding of why it failed and what prevents it from happening again. • Monitor cloud costs across the team’s toolset to maintain efficiency and justify expenditure. • Cross functional collaboration and mentorship • Build and maintain strong relationships with partner teams across engineering, partner solutions, and business development, leveraging trust to solve cross-team problems no single group could address alone. • Mentor and develop engineers across the team and broader organization while remaining open to learning from their experiences and perspectives. • Manage access and roles across the stack to deliver predictable, compliant experiences that meet privacy and security requirements. • Contribute to product quality by building new features, improving existing ones, and retiring deprecated functionality.
