Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, business administration or a related field or equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and relevant experience • Seven (7) years of progressive professional experience in accounting or finance, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization • Demonstrated experience with nonprofit Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), restricted fund accounting, cost allocation, and audit support • Working knowledge of federal grant compliance and reporting requirements • Strong proficiency with accounting systems, financial reporting tools, and Microsoft Excel • The Strongest Candidates Will • Be committed to NFF’s values, mission, and approach to community impact • Understand CDFIs and their role in nonprofit financing • Work independently and effectively in a remote environment and build strong, trust-based relationships with colleagues and partners across geographies and time zones in a highly matrixed organization • Have strong attention to detail and well-developed reconciliation and review skills • Communicate clearly and proactively and partner effectively across teams • Manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced environment • Collaborate with a dynamic and mission-driven team • Demonstrate a learning orientation and commitment to continuous learning and improvement • Thrive in a fast-paced, changing, and at times ambiguous context • Leverage online collaboration tools, Salesforce, and Microsoft Office

Responsibilities

• Grant Accounting, Compliance, and Reporting (35%) • Manage financial review, accounting, and reporting for assigned grants, including federal grants subject to Single Audit requirements. • Ensure timely and accurate revenue recognition for grants and contributions in accordance with GAAP, FASB guidance, and OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200). • Prepare and post monthly journal entries related to grant revenue, expense allocations, and releases from restricted net assets. • Maintain grant revenue, grant receivable, and net asset release schedules; reconcile schedules to the general ledger and trial balance each month. • Partner with Program, Lending, and Finance teams to prepare grant financial reports and ensure alignment with funder agreements. • Support post-award compliance and monitoring processes and serve as a primary accounting contact for grant-related audits. • Prepare grant-related documentation and schedules for the annual financial audit and federal Single Audit. • NMTC Accounting & Reporting Support (35%) • Maintain NMTC fund-related accounting records in accordance with GAAP and fund accounting standards. • Reconcile NMTC fund bank accounts and related general ledger balances. • Record quarterly accruals of NMTC asset management fee revenue and maintain related schedules. • Track and reconcile expenses paid by NFF on behalf of NMTC funds; prepare and invoice receivables for reimbursement. • Review quarterly and annual NMTC fund financial statements and draft tax returns prepared by external auditors and advisors prior to investor distribution. • Support NMTC fund exits, including cash reconciliations, final financial statements, audits, and tax filings. • Maintain and improve accounting processes and internal controls related to NMTC activity, identifying opportunities for efficiency and consistency. • Financial Operations (20%) • Contribute to monthly and quarterly close activities, including restricted fund reconciliations and reporting. • Partner with Finance leadership on financial systems modernization, process improvement, and automation efforts. • Support cross-functional projects related to financial technology implementation, workflow redesign, and continuous improvement. • Meetings and Other Duties as Assigned (10%) • Participate in internal and external meeting, department meetings, training sessions, and cross-functional collaboration as appropriate. • As work and community/client needs change, assignments, projects, and job duties may evolve in support of organizational priorities.

This role leads key accounting work streams with a primary focus on grant accounting and compliance, New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) accounting support, and special projects as they arise. As a nonprofit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), NFF integrates mission and capital across its work. This role partners closely with program, lending, and finance colleagues to ensure accurate financial reporting, strong stewardship of restricted funds, and compliance with federal and funder requirements. This Director role is well-suited for a detail-oriented, analytical professional who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. • NFF has offices in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Oakland, and Los Angeles. This is a US-based remote role, with a strong preference for candidates within commutable distance to one of NFF’s offices. NFF has core business hours where we expect all staff to be available from 9 am to 5 pm local time, and occasional travel (20%) is required. • NFF offers a generous benefits package that currently includes up to twenty (20) paid holidays/business closure days, three (3) floating holidays, flexible time off, group medical insurance with a funded health reimbursement account, dental and vision plans, life insurance and disability plans, a retirement plan with both a non-elective employer contribution (4%) and additional match contribution (up to 2%), a “work from home” fund, and flexible spending accounts to cover health, dependent care, and commuter costs.
